Football, also known as soccer in some countries, has ancient origins and can be traced back to various cultures throughout history. The modern version of the game, however, originated in England in the mid-19th century, with the establishment of standardized rules.
Football is the most popular and widely followed sport globally. It boasts an enormous fan base, with billions of fans across continents. The FIFA World Cup, held every four years, is one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.
The standard football field, as defined by FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), is rectangular, with a length ranging from 100 to 110 meters and a width of 50 to 100 meters.
A standard football team consists of 11 players, including one goalkeeper. Teams can make a limited number of substitutions during a match, typically three, to replace players due to injuries or tactical decisions.
A football match is divided into two halves, each lasting 45 minutes, with a 15-minute halftime break. In some cases, extra time may be played in knockout competitions to determine a winner if the score is tied at the end of regulation.
The primary objective in football is to score goals. A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line between the goalposts and beneath the crossbar. Each goal counts as one point.
The offside rule is a fundamental aspect of football. AA player is considered offside if they are nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when the ball is played to them.
